This fighter was intended as a replacement for the IJA workhorse, the Ki-43, but never really lived up to expectations and in the end only about 1200 were built. After the first few Ki 44 I’s were built the two 7.7mm guns in the nose were replaced with 12.7mm guns, giving the aircraft four in total as it already had two of this calibre in the wings. The next version was the Ki 44-II which gained a more powerful Ha-109 1,520-hp engine, some armour and fuel tank protection, plus a stronger undercarriage. Since the interior coating of the Ki-43 Oscar can be substantiated as being fully coated in the cockpit area with the blue-green aotake, this close cousin, the Ki-44 Tojo most likely was painted the same.
